The gardens are exploding with color!
By now your plants have had time to fully stretch their limbs, filling your gardens with green and color. Gardening is much easier when the weather is on our side, but Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate with our best laid plans. Heat spikes have popped up now and again, and the hail storm in June demolished many of our customers' gardens. Moisture wise, it's been right about average. Plus, lately, things seem to be mellowing out to a hospitable climate in which our plants can thrive.
Your vegetable gardens should be well established and beginning to bear crops. Now it's time to watch out for pests. Keep an eye on your tomatoes for horn worms. They are camouflaged green, plump and have a red horn on their rear. You can tell if you have them if suddenly you have a lot of leafless stems. When you find the horn worms, simply pick them off and dispose of them naturally.
Seeing black spots on the bottom of your tomatoes? That usually indicates a calcium deficiency . Mix one tablespoon of Epsom salts with a gallon of water. Use this mixture to water the tomato plants for the next 3-4 waterings.
If you have any comments or questions please e-mail us. We are always here to help. We would love to hear how your gardens are performing this year.
